The painter Helene Schjerfbeck was a representative of Finnish naturalism. She portrayed women and children and created her designs in soft colors and with a shadowy and filigree line. She also put her own face on paper countless times – her self-portraits are considered incomparable in 20th-century painting. Schjerfbeck’s works convey a deep melancholy. As wood or hard foam prints, they unfold a particularly harmonious effect.
